1. Attention Getter - Video Clip (00:28 – 00:48)
(1) Before the speech, let me show you something.
http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=102970&title=alan-greenspan
2. Topic Clear
(1) The same concerns arise these days. “Where I have to put my money”
(2) Because, in FOMC statement, “The Federal Open Market Committee decided to lower its target for the federal funds rate 50 basis points to 3 percent.”
3. Thesis
(1) There is something hidden beyond this statement. The hidden message to us and for us is this. We really want to stimulate U.S economy. Are you ready?
3. Credibility
(1) I am Econ major and now taking Econ 404W which is focused on monetary policy. Also, I wrote a paper how important monetary policy is. Through my experience, I find out cutting interest rate has more meaning than itself.
5. Preview
(1) I will tell you what the hidden message is after explaining the reasons and audiences of this speech.
6. Transition to Body
(1) First, the reason why.
II. Body
1. Exigency
(1) There are two factors which force FOMC to cut targets for FRR.
(2) First of All, the growth rate of U.S GDP is less than expected
1) Peter S. Goodman says, “The Commerce Department reported that the economy went into a stall in the last quarter of 2007, estimating that growth slowed to an annual rate of 0.6 percent, from 4.9 percent in the third quarter.”
(3) Second, Unemployment rate is increasing little by little but gradually.
1) Kris Maher mentioned in Wall Street Journal, December’s unemployment rate ticked up to 5% from 4.7% in November…
(4) Summary - Due to the overall economic problems, FOMC has no choice but to cut FRR by 50 basis points.
(5) Transition –And there are some groups of people who are really paying all their attentions to Chairman Bernanke’s step.
2. Audience
(1) They are working in the financial sector such as stock market, exchange market, and bond market,
1) Andrews and Herszenhorn describes, “The big rate cut initially prompted a rally in stock prices, with the Dow Jones industrial average jumping more than 100 points immediately after the Fed announcement.
(3) Summary - Even though it is important to everybody in America, financial markets and monetary policy organizations are the most sensible of Fed’s step.
(4) Transition – Up to now, I am analyzing what I have been seen, but now-on, let’s figure out what is beyond the announcement.
3. Constraints
(1) First, there is a hidden message to the congress, but Federal Reserve cannot explicitly say because of political Independence, which is giving money to the people as soon as possible.
1) Andrews and Herszenhorn says, “At the same time, the senate continued work on a $161 billion plan to prop up Main Street with tax rebates and temporary tax cuts.”
2) Also, in New York Times, “Many Economists are far from convinced that even combination of tax rebates and cheaper money would prevent a recession.”
3) if not, the situation could get worse.
4) that is why Former Chairman of Fed, Alan Greenspan says in his book, “And I warned against panicky spending increases or tax cuts that would overstimulate the economy and trigger another inflationary spiral.
(3) Summary – For the sake of the political independence, Fed does not point out the delay work of the congress, but we could find what is hidden – Tax Rebates, now.
III Conclusion
1. Transition – Through analyzing the explicit and implicit exigency and listeners, and hidden messages we can see what Fed really wants.
2. Summary
The possibility of economic recession is increasing due to the slow growth of GDP and high unemployment rate, Federal Reserve cut the rate by 50 basis points to stimulate U.S economy.
3. Restate Thesis
By releasing the FOMC statement, they are asking Government. We are ready. Are you ready?
4. Decisive Closing
If they are ready, What Fed want is, passing the tax rebate package as soon as possible so, let people go to Florida during the spring break, spend money and fuel economy.

Comments
Caitlin Leahy: Great opening...it really got my attention! You really seemed to know what you were talking about but I was a little confused by some of the terminology you used. Everything seemed well researched and you had good transitions. I would work on slowing down for the next speech because you talked a little too fast at times. Great job!
Whitney Trompeter: Great attention getter. I love Jon Stewart! You also had good credentials and you could tell besides that that you knew your topic well. You rocked a little bit on your feet at times, but it wasn't too obvious. Overall, well done!
Michael McKenna: You had a great introduction. I love the Daily Show! You gave a lot of information, which goes along with your credibility that you know much about the subject. Your eye contact was good, except that it seemed as though you kept looking up at the back corner of the room, at times you would gloss the rest of the room, but a majority was at the wall, which is fine because not every notices it. On the whole, you did a good job!
Jess Mannion: Your attention getter was very funny and effective!! Your speech reflected that your knowledge of the subject was solid and you did your research. Try maintaining more solid eye-contact and slowing down, you seemed rushed at points in your speech. By and large your speech was very good, you made it interesting by adding a little humor in the introduction and conclusion :-)!!
David Oh: Your introduction was very different and creative. Your flow was great too. However, it seemed like you were trying to avoid looking at us. You had a tendency to look up a lot. Besides that, you were clear and had a good amount of sources. Good job!
Laura O'Neal: As people said above, your attention getter was great- good choice! You also established believable credability and your tone was really good while you were speaking which helped you come across as professional. I love your topic- I think the economy is something that people our age should be thinking more about. My only advice is to try and make some more eye contact during your next speech- you seemed to be looking over people's heads rather than at them. But, besides that, really good job Chris!
John Galvin: Chris that intro was really funny man. It definitely got the class interested in your speech. Your being an econ major really helped your credibility and you infused your speech with a lot of helpful facts. Overall you seemed really confident and did a good job.
Siama Manzoor: Chris, very cool attention getter. You seemed very knowledgeable about your topic and you really stuck to the main points throughout the speech. You also kept pretty good eye contact. Nice work.
Enrique Ortiz: Again, your attention getter was phenomenal, and was particularly important to me, since I have just finished reading his book! The tone used throughout the speech was done well, and your eye contact matched the high quality of your speech. Also, the topic chosen, and the sources cited for your speech were very credible, and interesting. Normally the topic of interest rates, bonds, and financial markets is not too exciting for college students, but you managed to do it in a great fashion. My suggestions for the second speech would be to slow down the delivery (I had the same problem), and to keep up the good work!
Scot Brown: Maybe this is just me, but it wasn't entirely clear what your specific artifact was. Was it the Daily Show clip? Was it the words of Alan Greenspan? Was it simply the actions of the FOMC? This wasn't clarified from your set up.
#2 SPEECH
I. Introduction
(1) Video clip
(2) 2000 years ago, God said to his people “It is I; Don’t be afraid.”(Jn 6:20) Year 2008, Ben Bernanke, the chair man of the Federal Reserve Bank, said, It is I; Don’t be afraid.
(3) I am analyzing Federal Open Market Committee statement, “The Federal Open Market Committee decided today to lower its target for the federal funds rate 50 basis points to 3 percent.”
(4) Edmond L. Andrews said in the New York Times, “in lowering its benchmark federal funds rate by half a percentage point, to 3 percent, the central bank signaled that it was ready to err on the side of boldness in fending off a possible recession.”
(5) Last time, I analyzed this statement by exigency, audience, and constraints. As I studied current issues in Econ 404W class, I found it is something we have to know. So, I want to show how well this statement is written and conveys core message why the U.S economy needs a quarter drop of target for the Federal Funds Rate.
(6) For that, I will explain how logos, ethos, and pathos work to make the point clear in this statement
(7) First, I want to enumerate logical evidences elucidated in the Federal Open Market Committee statement.
II. Body
1. This document employs several forms of logical argument
(1) It said, “Financial markets remain under considerable stress and credit has tightened further for some businesses and households.”
1) Jeffrey McCracken said in the Wall Street Journal, “The banks really don't know what kind of room they have to add new loans for companies until the banks fill the hole on their nonperforming loans," including mortgages, credit-card debt and auto loans that are souring, says Henry Miller, chairman of Miller Buckfire, a financial restructuring firm. "The dominoes have started to fall."
2) It tells us that financial markets in the U.S have faced some pressures which affect on monetary liquidity.
(2) Second, “recent information indicates a deepening of the housing contraction as well as some softening in labor markets.”
1) In the Wall Street Journal, Kelly Evans and John Flowers mentioned, “The National Association of Realtors said home resales slipped a seasonally adjusted 0.4% last month from December to an annual selling pace of 4.89 million units. That was 23.4% below the pace recorded a year earlier.
2) In addition, Kris stated in the Wall Street Journal, “Companies are taking a cautious approach to adding jobs, and in some cases adopting hiring freezes, as they try to figure out how to deal with economic uncertainty without big layoffs.”
(3) It also mentioned, “…downside risks to growth remain.”
Greg IP stated in the Wall Street Journal, “The Federal Reserve disclosed that its policy makers lowered their forecast for economic growth this year to between 1.3% and 2%, half a percentage point below the level of their previous forecast, in October.”
(4) Data never lies. Also, articles which are based on the data never lie. Throughout analyzing data we have now, we could recognize the U.S economy is in trouble. That is why Ban Bernanke comes up and says, “I will rescue you. Don’t be afraid.”
(5) The important things are not only the data, but also those who made this decision.
2. Secondly, the Statement relies on the ethos of the banks and the signatories to establish strong credibility to support the cut
(1) First, the emblem tells us this is official government document.
(2) also, In the statement, as they explicitly stated how many regional Federal Reserve Banks submitted requests for cutting the interest rate and who voted for and who went against it, the Federal Open Market Committee statement could gain credibility.
(3)“the requests are submitted by the Boards of Directors of the Federal Reserve Banks of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, and San Francisco.”
1) Nine among twelve regional Federal Reserve Banks submitted requests to lower short term interest rate. It means it is matter of urgent not to fall into recession.
(4) Besides, the names of those were voting for and against the FOMC monetary policy action are written.
“The Federal Open Market Committee consists of twelve voting members: the seven members of the Board of Governors and five of the twelve Federal Reserve Bank presidents.” (The Federal Reserve Board)
Except Richard W. Fisher, the president of Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, all members include Ban. Bernanke voted for.
Among twelve voting members, eleven members voted for cutting the target for Federal Funds Rate. It shows most of them agreed that it is reasonable to cut the target to stimulate the U.S economy.
(4) Through this written fact, we can identify the U.S economy is under unfavorable circumstances and cutting Federal Funds Rate is strongly needed to stimulate U.S economy.
(5) Finally, let’s find out whether this statement relies on pathos as well.
3. The statement is pretty short and simple.
(1) So, it does not have introduction or conclusion but just the main point because any pathos method is not used to move audiences.
(2) Since it is government document, and people are really sensitive to what Federal Reserve Banks do, it would lose its function if it embraces pathos.
IP said in the Wall Street Journal, “The U.S. faces an unwelcome combination of looming recession and persistent inflation that is reviving angst about stagflation, a condition not seen since the 1970s.”
With this gloomy situation, the Board of Federal Reserve never wants to mislead people.
(3) By not using pathos method, they make their statement as simple and precise as possible – we cut the target.
(4) By examining logos, ethos, and pathos, we could know the message of Federal Open Market Committee is delivered nicely.
III. Conclusion
(1) It stated enough and reasonable evidences which explain the current U.S economy and showed how it is credible as listing the names of people who voted for and went against it. However, it does not stir audience’s emotion because it would distract audiences.
(2) Its message is, the U.S economy fumbled, and here, we come to recover turnover. We can bring the U.S economy to where it is supposed to be, so, do not worry about it.
(3) For recovery, the Federal Open Market Committee says, a little cut the target for the Federal Funds Rate needs to be taken place.
(4) We will clean up the snow on your way, what you need to do is just go back on your way.

YB - The power point you used in your speech helped me understand your speech. You had great eye contact, and your speech pretty much flowed well together. You could have spoke a little bit louder, but overall you did a great job.
Caitlin Leahy- you had a nice visual aid and your points were clearly well researched. Your argument was well stated. Work on making more eye contact and not just reading from your visual aid. I think you could also vary your emphasis a bit more. Other than that you did a great job!
Nate Scarbrough- Nice speech, great visual aid, and the amount of good facts/stats you had supporting your arguement really helped to make your speech good. Nice.
Alex Franklin: I really liked your visual aid. The way you brought the main points to the forefront really helped me understand your speech! You're attention getter sort of confused me, but other than that, great job!
John Galvin: Chris you made the economic issues of our country very interesting. You had a very good choice of a visual (the fed reserve press release), which gave your presentation a very professional feel to it. Also, you had a good attention getter.

Those who are Chosen
“Haven’t you seen Shrek yet?” I asked one of my friends when the Shrek, the first episode of its series, created a sensation in my country. He said, “No, not yet.” So, I took the other friend by the hand, introduced him to others and say, “Here we go. This is Shrek!” and we laughed and began to tease him not because he looked like Shrek but because my friend looked like Shrek. As I watched Shrek the Third while I am studying in America, I wondered if someone called or has a sobriquet as Shrek, maybe it is not just because one looks like Shrek. There is something is hidden behind the name “Shrek.” That is the symbolical image of those who live in foreign countries as the minority, and, furthermore, they are ethnically and culturally different from indigenous group of people. In this essay, I would like to bring the veiled prejudice and bias that the majority as well as the minority, who were in the main stream in their nations, have in the movie – Shrek the Third – which could illustrate our daily lives.
Where they are from
We need to identify who the characters playing major roles in the movie. Let’s go back to Shrek One which is released in 2001. The king gave a command to take all characters, such as Pinocchio, Cinderella, Snow-White, Rapunwel, the three pigs, and so on, into custody as well as Shrek because the mirror said his kingdom is not perfectly his own. Each of them is not just the common people in that country but the main character in their own stories. In other words, every character is really important, necessary and famous in each of their stories. Nonetheless, just because they are living in the place where its culture and ethnicity is different from theirs, they have no choice but to be under arrest.
In addition, they have lived in so remote area that they cannot have an influence on the nation. Especially, Shrek lived in the place surrounded by trees as if it is the wall. He does not afflict those who look like human. In short, they are separated. Shrek has his own life, and he satisfied with his life: He deserves it. However, those look like us do not think Shrek deserves it. It is not a main concern whether Shrek really harasses and annoy people or not. The important thing is Shrek is different from them in terms of culture and ethnicity, so Shrek is nothing but the potential jeopardy. He is not from where the majority are from, so he cannot be united with them. Hence, they need to take away Shrek.
In my personal opinion, it reflects what is going on in most of developed countries, and criticizes the majority living in the wealthy countries. In general, one who lives in the country better than one’s nation has the potentiality to be a successful person in the future. It could be translated into other words; become somebody who could be helpful and needed in any society. Nevertheless, just because he or she is rooted in different traditional behavior and ethicality, one’s ability or personality is not respected not apparently but tacitly. It should not have taken place all around the world, but it has been happening actually. One of the series of the movie, “Shrek One,” wants to tell us is that we should respect every constituent member of our societies.
Become the King
“I can’t let this happen! I can’t! I am the rightful king of FAR FAR AWAY. I promise you this, mother. I will restore the dignity of my throne.” Prince Charming shouted while he is sitting in the outside of the bar where he used to played the prince who tries to rescue the princess caught by a monster looks like Shrek in the dinner show. He is depicted as the person who is really greedy and craving to be in the highest position in the nation. Throughout the series of Shrek, the story tells us in the point of view that we may have in general. Prince Charming cannot let Shrek become the King of FAR FAR AWAY because he is an ogre. It seems that Prince Charming cannot accept that Shrek, an ogre and alien, is chosen for the king. He thought he is the “rightful king” not because he is better than Shrek overall, but because he is insider.
“…Oh, come on, dad, an ogre as a king? I don’t think that is such a good idea.” Shrek replied as he waved his hand the King Harold because King Harold asked, “…This kingdom needs a new king. You and Fiona are in the next line for the throne…” Shrek does not want to be the king of FAR FAR AWAY because he is different. On the Contrary, at the very first beginning, he strongly wants to be the king which is the position is given to who save the Princess Fiona. That is why Shrek went out and finally rescued Princess Fiona, and he began to live in the palace with Fiona. However, things are not going as he wished.
After Shrek and Fiona were gaudily dressed up for the party held in the palace, Fiona asked to a tailor with a sigh, “Uh is this really necessary?” The tailor answered, O-ho, quite necessary, Fiona.” “I am Shrek,” “whatever,” the tailor replied back. Through this conversation, we can see that he has no choice but to follow the rules and culture in FAR FAR AWAY even though he is in the next line of the king. It seems that Shrek is like a fish out of water; Shrek hit the invisible ceiling which blocks his way. Then, he grasped that an ogre cannot be a king because an ogre does not look like those who live in FAR FAR AWAY. He tried to break the gap between him and human, but he acknowledged that he cannot.
After he realized the difference between him and people, he tried to keep the rule he made up in his mind rather than being united with human beings.
I know it is like feel not to ready for something. Even ogres get scared, you know once in a while……. alright…you know, it maybe hard to believe what with my obvious charming and good looks, but people used to think that I am a monster, and for a long time, I believe them. But after a while, you learn to ignore the names, people call you and you just trust who you are.
This may show how hard living in integrated way is because the mainstream thinks their culture and lifestyle is the best and tries to keep it in the front line. Consequently, the underdog could not do anything but leave not to lose their identity, or throw out their valuables and follow what Romans do; this should not be what human is supposed to looking for. This story tells us that we need to find your identities and keep yours in us, not just in you. If somebody cannot do it, we have to help them rather than abandon them. The nation should not be divided by the difference of culture, ethnicity or race.
The Loser
There is an out-of-the-way mountain village where the villain lives. It is a state of extreme disorder, and the resident has no means of livelihood. This is where the bad characters in the fairy stories live. One day, Prince Charming went there and convinced them, “Once upon a time, someone decided we are the losers. There are two sides in every story. Our sides have not been told. So, who will join me? Who wants to come out and talk for once?” As soon as Prince Charming spoke, the bully gave a shout of joy. They are not glad because they can escape this poor place and be successful in the society where ordinary people live. On the contrary, they are delighted because they can take vengeance on those who are winner in their stories. This is how society composed in FAR FAR AWAY and in our real society. It seems that every member of our society lives together, but in real, they are mingled.
Shrek said, “I’m not here to eat him…you are the new king of FAR FAR AWAY.” Arthur Pendragon replied back, “Is this for real……So, wait, I’m real the only heir.” “…One and only.” “Give me a just second,” Artie responded with a pompous voice. “My good people, I think there is a lesson here for all of us…hey, maybe this guy has feelings……because maybe, just maybe, this guy is gonna turn out to be, uh, I don’t know, a king? And maybe his first loyal decree will be the vanish who every picked on him, that’s why I’m looking at you, Justin Tim.” This dialogue demonstrates what kind of thought Artie, who is bullied by his classmates, has; this would not be just his expression, but the mien of rejected people. Throughout this conversation we may know how much the neglected are injured emotionally.
We may think back to the past days and look today as we listen to the words from losers. They, the losers, may be just different part of the society. If we did not have Captain Hook, we would not have Peter Pan as well. They are not far behind us; they are just far away from us because they are in different ways. Through the story in the Shrek the Third, this could be the lesson: being united within different appearance.
The Second Generation
“Honey, let’s try to be rational about this. Have you seen a baby lately? They just eat and poop, they cry…imagine an ogre baby. They extra cry and they extra poop.” Shrek refused pitilessly to what Fiona suggested to have a baby because maybe he does not want his baby to get through the same contempt and anguish from what he suffered. “Having a baby is not going to ruin your life. It’s not my life I am worried about ruining. It’s the kids. I mean, whenever you heard about the phrase as sweet as an ogre, or as nurturing as an ogre, or how about ‘looking at lovely my dad, he is a real ogre.”
It seems that Shrek uses the word “extra” as unwelcome or dissimilar. In other word, Shrek pointed out how difficult the second generation of immigrants gets along with the decedents of indigenous. He thought the ogre babies are not welcome in the place where human lives because they are ogre – they are different. Since Shrek got through the hard time when he began to be associated with people, he believed that his babies would be given a cold shoulder when they go out into the real world, not like home as well. However, the truth is, nobody knows whether the ogre babies will be received favorably or not. There is no need of apprehension, but, because of his fixed thought and experience as a minority, he tried to confine himself not to do something looks not good, whether it is actually good or not. This is the bias what Shrek has, and the ethnical groups may have. To be associated with people who have various cultural backgrounds, one needs to look back on one self to find out their bias. The approach from both sides is needed to bring better relationships between them.
Conclusion
But, you know, a good friend of mine once told me, that just because people treat you like the villain, or an ogre, or just some losers, it doesn’t mean that you are one. The thing that matters most is what you think of yourself. If there is something that you really want, or someone you really want to be, then the only person standing on your way is you.”
In the end of the movie, people, some of them are bay guys and some are good guys, became unified as they heard what Artie said above. Shrek the Third maybe give us the simple solution for racial problems in wealthy countries, especially America. Some of them maybe cannot speak English very well. However, it does not mean that they will never speak English fluently. Moreover, they can speak their language which most American cannot do. The real you is not the person as you appear to other people; rather, the real you is “what you think of yourself.” Instead of waiting until somebody leads the vanguard in the society, putting yourself on the way you want would be the best way you can overcome your limit and ceiling.
